2 PhD fellowships in ‘Biodiversity and Cultivation of Fungi’
Two PhD fellowships are available from 1st of April 2013 to 31st of December 2015 at Goethe-University Frankfurt, Department of Biological Sciences (Institute of Ecology, Evolution and Diversity). The positions are framed within the LOEWE excellence cluster ‘Integrative Fungal Research’. The cluster has recently been funded, and includes researchers in mycology at four universities in Germany and the Senckenberg Society. The aim of the cluster is to synergistically tie together the basic research areas of biodiversity research, molecular genetics, and genomics with translational research in biochemistry and biotechnology. Thus, the research cluster offers an ideal environment for scientific development and profiling.
We are looking for motivated and creative candidates who will develop individual PhD projects on the biodiversity and ecological significance of fungal endophytes. More specifically, the projects will be aimed to identify endophytes’ patterns of distribution, association and interaction with plant hosts, to assess evolutive processes leading to plant-fungus symbioses, and to experimentally test potential mutualistic associations with relevance for adaptation to the environment. The applicants should hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) in biology or related fields. We expect good written and oral communication skills in English.
We offer a PhD fellowship for each position, comprising a monthly allowance of 1,400 euros and the possibility of a contract for the third year according to TvH E13 1/2 terms.
