Post-Doctoral Fellow/Research Associate in Phylogenetics/Molecular Diagnosis The main objective of this joint project between the Department of Plant Pathology & Environmental Microbiology at Penn State and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) is to survey and identify high-risk pathogens threatening the PA agriculture using both the molecular and conventional diagnostic tools. Main target pathogens are Phytophthora species, but additional pathogens may be included. Experience in phylogenetics and molecular diagnosis is highly desirable but not essential. The candidate will work at PDA (Harrisburg, PA), which is located about 1.5 hours away from Penn State. Main responsibilities include: (a) identifying Phytophthora isolates/species via sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, (b) assisting researchers at PDA in conducting real-time PCR-based detection of P. ramorum in stream samples and plant materials from local surveys; and (c) developing molecular diagnostic tools for selected pathogens. This...

Symposium organized by the MSA Student Section 2013-2014 Functional traits determine where fungi can live, how they evolve, and what other organisms they interact with. Traits can be (micro- or macro-) morphological, such as spore and fruiting body shape, as well as ecological, such as drought-tolerance, virulence, and the ability to digest cellulose. Differences among fungal traits can influence ecosystem processes. From a molecular perspective, fungal functional genes have been identified and measured directly in communities. Investigating fungal traits will advance our understanding of pattern and function at different levels of organization (taxa, populations, communities, ecosystems).

This symposium discusses the evolution of selected traits and how key attributes of fungal taxa influence their environment and stress response. New trait databases have been launched to (1) centralize current knowledge on fungal traits,...
