A post-doctoral research opportunity is available to study impatiens downy mildew disease with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Systematic Mycology and Microbiology Laboratory (SMML) in Beltsville, MD.  The desired appointment start date is the spring of 2017.

Impatiens downy mildew (IDM) disease caused by the oomycete Plasmopara obducens is one of several destructive downy mildews affecting specialty crop production in the U.S. and worldwide.  The selected applicant will establish sentinel plots in partnership with collaborators and major U.S. arboreta collections and use these resources together with molecular biology tools to address questions about pathogen evolution, persistence and the role of soil-borne innoculum in the IDM disease cycle.  In addition to serving as lead for this project, the selected applicant will cooperate with other team members, students, collaborators and stakeholders, and contribute to common research goals.

Postdoctoral Research Associate positon is available in the Sharma Lab at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, U.S.A. We seek a highly motivated individual with a Ph.D. to participate in an NSF funded project (http://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1355155) that is exploring the role of plant-fungal interactions in explaining plant species distributions in a tropical rainforest in Costa Rica. The research team includes scientists from the University of New Mexico, the University of Hawaii, and the University of Costa Rica. This position is based in Lubbock, TX, but intense field work will be required during the rainy season in Costa Rica (typically 3-4 weeks per year).

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION studying the mechanisms of resistance to white-nose syndrome (WNS), an emerging disease of bats caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. Two years of funding is available through the University of Wisconsin's Department of Pathobiological Sciences and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center located in Madison, WI. The primary objective of this project is to determine the biotic and abiotic properties of soil that reduce the abundance of infectious P. destructans in the environment. The specific objectives pertaining to WNS are to: 1) identify cave soils that suppress P. destructans, 2) characterize microbial communities and soil properties that may suppress P. destructans in the environment, and 3) investigate the potential to manipulate soils so that they are less conducive for the survival of P. destructans. The USGS National Wildlife Health Center conducts diagnostic work and research on numerous aspects of WNS and other wildlife diseases, and the selected candidate may have opportunities to work on additional projects as time and funding permit.

The Walton lab is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on a project to biosynthesize and screen small cyclic peptides derived from Amanita phalloides and other fungi. The position is full-time for one year starting on or before January 15, 2017.   • Knowledge of fungal protoplasting and transformation.
  • Knowledge of yeast transformation and genetic manipulation.
  • Knowledge of fungal mutagenesis and methods of classical fungal genetics.
  • Thorough understanding of vector designing and assembly.
  • Experienced in developing specialized media for screening of fungal isolates under various selective pressures.
  • Knowledge of high throughput screening of filamentous fungi in 24/ 96 well format.
  • Knowledge of pure stain isolation from mixed population by systemic approach.
  • Knowledge of various types of microbiology techniques including but not limited to various types of staining, microbe cultivation, and adaptive evolution.
  • Hands on experience working with 7-15L fermenters.
  • Experience trouble shooting fungal and yeast isolate scale-up in 7-15L fermenters.
  • Demonstrated ability to approach solutions by systematic trouble-shooting in forms of peer-reviewed papers or patents.
  • Experience with technical and scientific writing.
