Ph.D. Student Positions in Plant Pathology at University of Florida The Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Florida (UF) is currently recruiting motivated Ph.D. students for Fall 2015. We are seeking students to study basic and applied aspects of plant-microbe interactions within the context of agricultural systems, including fungal plant pathogens. UF Plant Pathology offers a dynamic research environment that includes 37 faculty advisors and a vibrant, diverse graduate student population. The Department is headquartered at the main campus in Gainesville, Florida but many faculty are distributed across the state at nine of our Research and Education Centers. Due to Florida’s diverse climate, research in our department addresses a variety of plant pathogenic microbes on crops ranging from tomatoes and watermelons to sugarcane and avocados. Re-domesticating an ancient domesticated fungus A 4-year PhD position is available in my lab at Wageningen University in The Netherlands. This NWO funded project will study adaptations of the Termitomyces fungi cultivated by fungus-growing termites to a symbiotic lifestyle. The work will use in vitro microbial techniques to study life-history traits (mycelial growth and asexual spore production and details of enzyme production) of Termitomyces strains, followed by genetic analyses. We have a collection of more than 100 Termitomyces strains, associated with the three most common genera of fungus-growing termites and recently the genome of one strain has been sequenced. The primary goal of this project is to gain fundamental insight in functional aspects of coevolution and mutualistic symbiosis. Ultimately, this knowledge may be used for the artifical cultivation of the highly valued mushrooms formed by Termitomyces. Cornell University’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York offers a Summer Research Scholars Program where undergraduate students can participate in exciting research projects in one of four disciplines including; Entomology, Food Science, Horticulture, and Plant Pathology/Plant-Microbe Biology. Graduate Student Opportunities in Fungal Ecology The Hynson lab at the University of Hawaii Manoa, Department of Botany is currently recruiting highly motivated, enthusiastic, and well qualified graduate students for Fall 2014 enrollment. We study fungal ecology with an emphasis on plant-fungal interactions such as the mycorrhizal symbiosis. The goal of our research is to increase our current understandings of the mycorrhizal symbiosis in relation to plant and fungal community dynamics and ecosystem function. We accomplish this through field and laboratory experiments that utilize cutting-edge techniques in molecular ecology and ecophysiology.
