PhD Position in Fungal Metagenomics Graduate student position beginning fall 2015 available at the University of Minnesota to investigate the ecology and bioactivity of nematode parasitic fungi. The Bushley lab in the Department of Plant Biology (http://www.cbs.umn.edu/plantbio/faculty/kathrynbushley) is a diverse, interdisciplinary, and stimulating research environment that values ethnic, cultural, and gender diversity. The project will be co-advised by Dr. Senyu Chen, a nematologist in the Department of Plant Pathology at UM (http://sroc.cfans.umn.edu/People/Faculty/SenyuChen/MissionsResearchActivities/index.htmi.umn.edu/). The University of Minnesota is home to a vibrant academic community with strong expertise in mycology, genetics, host-microbe interactions, and natural products chemistry. The university recently hired several new faculty in mycology, adding expertise to already strong programs in mycology (Bushley, Blanchette, Figuroa, Kennedy, Kistler, May, Nielsen, Schilling labs). Research will also utilize computational resources at the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (https://www.msi.umn.edu/) for high-throughput analysis of metagenomic data. Project Description: The project is part of an externally funded program that will investigate the diversity, distribution, and secondary metabolism of nematode parasitic fungi in agroecosystems. Research will involve culturing and metagenomic analysis of bulk soil, rhizosphere soil, plant roots, and various stages of the lifecycle of the soybean cyst nematode. The goals of the project are to understand the roles of both abiotic environmental factors and tillage practices in contributing to the abundance and persistence of nematode parasites in agroecosystems. We will also evaluate the parasitic ability and bioactivity of selected isolates for use as biocontrol agents against the soybean cyst nematode. Funding is available for at least three years. Qualifications: A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in biology, mycology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, botany and plant biology, or entomology/nematology and laboratory experience in basic molecular biology is desirable.
