Postdoctoral Positions: Microbial Ecology, Symbiosis, and Drug Discovery. Two post-doctoral positions available at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the laboratory of Dr. Cameron Currie. We are currently studying the role of small molecules in mediating symbiotic associations and the potential application of these compounds as drug leads. Drug Discovery and Bioinformatics – One position will focus on using next-generation sequencing technology and bioinformatics to help discover novel natural products. Specifically, the applicant will be expected to help facilitate the discovery of novel compounds through more rapid identification of strains with high secondary metabolite potential and explore the evolution of secondary metabolite biosynthesis across symbiotic microbes. Microbial Symbiosis – One position will focus on exploring the symbiosis between antibiotic-producing bacteria and fungus-growing ants using diverse approaches, including genome sequencing, RNA-Seq, imaging mass spectrometry, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, and in vivo experimental manipulations. Candidates should have a PhD with a background and interests in microbial genetics, genomics, microbiology, evolutionary biology, and/or ecology (or anticipation of completion of PhD by fall 2015). Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to work well within a highly collaborative and interactive environment. Support for these two positions comes from 2 recently funded 5-year NIH U19 center grants. Each position provides an opportunity to integrate field research in Brazil. Start date negotiable.
