Job Description: The Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP) at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is seeking a fulltime Mycologist to develop a program to assess the conservation status of fungi in Pennsylvania including the development of global ranks and the promotion of fungi conservation within the natural heritage program network. Responsibilities include coordination of survey and inventory of fungi throughout Pennsylvania, collaboration with the Pennsylvania Biological Survey, mycology community and mushroom clubs, development of an official check list and ranking recommendations, and supplying expertise and recommendation regarding the conservation of fungi within the state. This position will also offer unique expertise to the natural heritage network and NatureServe and will help to encourage the conservation of fungi beyond state boundaries. PNHP has offices in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. This position will be housed in the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg but will be expected to travel extensively for targeted surveys, collaborative outings and meetings.
Qualifications: Applicants should have substantial experience in the field of mycology, possess a PhD or Master’s degree and be familiar with the fungi of Pennsylvania and the northeastern U.S. Familiarity with Pennsylvania’s flora, natural communities, ecology, conservation biology as well as the role of fungi in forest ecology is also critical. The candidate must have the ability to travel, work in remote areas, and capture and process field data.
Position Duration: Fulltime beginning in mid-2023.
Location: The position is based in Harrisburg, PA.
Pay: Competitive wage consistent with experience.
