Entomologist (Postdoctoral Research Associate) to conduct research on microbial management of ambrosia beetles

USDA-ARS, Robert W. Holley Center for Agriculture and Health, Ithaca, New York (located on the Cornell University campus)

Description of Duties

A postdoctoral position is available in the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research Unit, Ithaca, NY. The successful applicant will support research efforts within a multi-state funded project to improve the management of ambrosia beetles infesting tree crops. In this position, the incumbent will evaluate entomopathogenic and mycogenic fungi for ambrosia beetle pests of apple orchards. The research will investigate the efficacy of microbial biopesticides and optimize application methods including different application times and rates relative to the insect’s phenology or other aspects of its biology. Job duties include designing, conducting, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting research from laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies. The incumbent is expected to present results of these studies in publications in scientific journals and at scientific meetings. The successful candidate will function both independently and as a team member.

Qualification Requirements

Ph.D. in entomology, ecology or related discipline. Research experience in culturing fungi associated with insects, experimental design and statistical analysis is required. Excellent organizational and written and interpersonal communication skills are required. Field work will require having a valid driver’s license. Experience in insect pathology, insect biology and rearing is desired. Knowledge and/or experience with ambrosia beetles is an advantage but not required. A background check will be required for the selected candidate.

Salary and Duration

Applications will be reviewed until position is filled. This full-time postdoctoral position will be filled at the GS-11 level (currently $66,214 annual salary for the location).
