Postdoctoral Research Associate: Entomologist/Invertebrate Pathologist
LOCATION: USDA-ARS, Robert W. Holley Center for Agriculture and Health, Ithaca, New York (on the Cornell University campus)
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: A postdoctoral position is available in the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research Unit, Ithaca, NY. The successful applicant will support research efforts within a multi-state funded project to improve the management of ambrosia beetles infesting tree crops. In this position, the incumbent will evaluate entomopathogenic fungi for ambrosia beetle pests of apple orchards. The research will investigate the efficacy of microbial biopesticides and optimize application methods including different times and rates of product application relative to the insect’s phenology. Job duties include designing, conducting, analyzing, interpreting and reporting research from laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies. The incumbent is expected to present results of these studies in publications in scientific journals and at scientific meetings. The successful candidate will function both independently and as a team member, as required.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in entomology, ecology or related discipline. Research experience in insect pathology, including culturing fungi, experimental design and statistical analysis is required. Excellent organizational and written and interpersonal communication skills are required. Field work will require having a valid driver’s license. Experience in insect biology and rearing is desired. Knowledge and/or experience with ambrosia beetles is an advantage but not required. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and a background check will be required for the selected candidate.
SALARY AND DURATION: The preferred start date is by April 1, 2022. Applications will be reviewed until position is filled. This full-time postdoctoral position will be filled at the GS-11 level (currently $64,649 annual salary for the location). The position is funded for three years, with an initial appointment for two years with an extension for a third year contingent upon progress.
