MSA Foray: Koffler Scientific Reserve at Joker’s Hill, University of Toronto
Join your fellow attendees for a fantastic day of mycology and exploration at the Koffler Scientific Reserve at Joker’s Hill. KSR is located a short, 30 minute bus ride from the Hilton Toronto/Markham Hotel near Newmarket, Ontario. Described as a “living classroom”, KSR encompasses nearly 350 hectares of fields, wetlands, grasslands, and forest. There are numerous on-going research projects at the reserve, including fungal biodiversity.
The foray includes round-trip transportation, lunch, water, guided and free exploration, and a choice of trails for different physical abilities. We are limited to 150 seats, so register as soon as possible!
All foray attendees are required to complete a liability waiver before they can board the bus. Please consider completing this waiver and returning it ahead of time in the interest of efficiency the morning of the trip. Completed waivers can be returned to msafungi@reesgroupinc.com.

Tentative Schedule:
8:15 a.m. – Meet in lobby area of Hilton Toronto/Markham to check in and prepare to load buses
8:30 a.m. – Buses depart for Foray site
9:00 a.m. – Drop-off at Foray site
9:00 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. – Group photo, instructional briefing, divide participants into groups of 25 – 30.
9:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – Foray exploration!
11:45 a.m. – Return to drop-off/pick-up for lunch, provided by MSA
11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. – Lunch and specimen comparison
1:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. – Self-guided exploration and specimen review
2:45 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Return to drop off/pickup site, load buses for return to Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites
3:30 p.m. – Drop off at Hilton Toronto/Markham Suite

Karling Lecture: Professor Nancy Keller

Professor Keller is the Robert L. Metzenberg and Kenneth B. Raper Professor of Mycology in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and the Department of Plant Pathology at University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Her interest in fungal secondary metabolism dates back to her days as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho, Africa where she gained first-hand knowledge of molded and toxic food supplies. Her current interests focus on the role of secondary metabolites in steering fungal interactions in their ecological niches and genome mining for fungal natural products. She received her PhD from the Department of Plant Pathology at Cornell University in 1990 and was then employed as a post-doctoral research scientist with the USDA followed by employment as an Assistant and Associate Professor in the Plant Pathology Department at Texas A&M University before moving to the UW Madison. She is a Fellow of AAAS, the American Phytopathological Society, and the American Academy of Microbiology and recipient of the SIMB Charles Thom Award for outstanding scientific contributions to the field of industrial microbiology and biotechnology.
Secondary metabolites: armaments, shields and enigmatic languages of fungi
To the general public, fungal secondary metabolites (SMs) – if considered at all – are known due to accidental or purposeful ingestion (toxins and hallucinogens) or treatment of various infectious diseases (antibiotics). For practitioners in the science, we now understand that SMs are critical molecules steering the ecology and interactions of large numbers of fungi, particularly in specific Ascomycete and Basidiomycete taxa. Springing from the unexpected finding that fungal genomes contain an astonishing wealth of diverse SM blueprints called biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), technical advances in molecular genetic, computational and chemical analyses now allow laboratories worldwide to access BGCs and their products. Here I present a panoramic timeline touching on advances in BGC discovery, on SM mediated fungal/bacterial interactions and our optimism of solving a fungal SM mystery affecting Canadian agriculture.
