Maredith Berdeja
Hello, my name is Maredith Cassandra Berdeja. I am a first-generation Latina pursuing my master’s degree at California State University, Chico, where I study the effects of fire intensity on soil microbial communities and ectomycorrhizal fungi in blue oak woodlands. I grew up in a small city called Paramount, near Los Angeles, and earned my bachelor’s degree in Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at California State University – Chico. My love for science and nature started early! I grew up watching a lot of Animal Planet and nature documentaries, with The Crocodile Hunter and Zoboomafoo being my absolute favorites. Now, I’m passionate about microbial ecology, mentoring students, and advocating for more equitable access to science and education.
Beyond research, I enjoy hiking, reading, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family. I also have a little bearded dragon named Rukita who loves to cuddle. A fun fact about me: I don’t like carrots or worms! In the future, I hope to become a professor, run my own research lab, and continue supporting first-generation students in finding their passions. I’m incredibly grateful that my advisor introduced me to the world of mycology, and I’m beyond excited to return to the Mycological Society of America (MSA) conference this year!

The purpose of the Society is to promote and advance the science of mycology and to foster and encourage research and education in mycology in all its aspects. Members of the MSA meet annually to exchange information and build understanding of fungi
